Creating perfume is easy, and you'll need a few key ingredients that work together to make a harmonious and long-lasting fragrance. Let's take a look at each ingredient and why they are important in the perfume-making process.
1. Carrier Oil:
A carrier oil acts as the base of your perfume and helps to dilute and blend the essential oils. It ensures that the fragrance is safe to apply directly to your skin. It also keeps the perfume on your skin longer and slows down the absorption and evaporation rate. Common carrier oils include jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or fractionated coconut oil. These oils are odorless, less greasy than other carrier oils, and have a neutral scent, allowing the aroma of the essential oils to shine through. Using a carrier oil works well if you're making a roll on perfume.
2. Vodka:
Works well for either a roll on or a spray. Using vodka instead of a carrier oil will eliminate the possibility of getting your clothes oily, however it tends to absorb faster and evaporate quicker versus a carrier oil. Adding vodka to your perfume mixture also helps to preserve the fragrance and extend its shelf life if you are using water too. Vodka acts as a natural preservative due to its alcohol content. It also helps to disperse the essential oils evenly throughout the mixture.
3. Witch Hazel:
Witch hazel is a natural astringent that helps to balance and tone the skin. In perfume-making, it serves as an additional base for the fragrance. Witch hazel helps the essential oils mix well with the other ingredients and adds a subtle freshness to the final scent.
4. Distilled Water:
While tap water can be used in a pinch, using distilled water is recommended for the best results. Distilled water is free from impurities and minerals that may alter the scent of your perfume or leave a residue. It ensures a pure and clean base for your fragrance.
5. Essential Oils:
Essential oils are the heart and soul of your perfume. They provide the captivating scent and wellness benefits that make for a unique perfume. From floral scents like rose and jasmine to citrusy notes like bergamot and grapefruit, essential oils offer a wide range of fragrances to choose from. This study, on PubMed.gov suggested "that bergamot essential oil aromatherapy can be an effective adjunct treatment to improve individuals' mental health and well-being." You can customize your perfume oil for desired benefits such as promoting relaxation, boosting mood, or providing a sense of grounding.
You'll also want to shop for 10 ml roller bottles or 2 ounce glass spray bottles. These are easily found inexpensively on Amazon. It can also be fun to shop around and find a unique perfume bottle to use. This option can make a great gift too! You can also simply clean out and recycle glass containers you already have.
By combining these ingredients into a blend, you can create a well-balanced and personalized fragrance that suits your preferences and promotes a delightful sensory experience. So, gather these ingredients and let your creativity flow as you embark on the journey of crafting your own signature scent. Lately, I have found myself captivated by the enchanting aroma of Roman Chamomile essential oil. Its soothing and calming properties have not only made me a fan, but also left a profound impact on the horses I have introduced it to. It's fun to witness how the horses deeply inhale its scent and then eagerly seek more. Inspired by their response, I have created a few custom blends that incorporate Roman Chamomile, and that has also inspired me to grab some German Chamomile, and start experimenting with it. Let me share with you the recipes and the incredible benefits of these two essential oils.
Roman Chamomile, with its delicate and floral fragrance, is renowned for its calming and relaxing qualities. It possesses a gentle yet profound ability to ease tension and promote tranquility. This comes in incredibly useful with horses during vet or farrier visits, trailering and shows. Combining it with other complementary oils can enhance its wellness benefits and create an exquisite fragrance.
German Chamomile, on the other hand, has a deep blue color and more of an earthy, sweet scent. This makes it a wonderful grounding addition to a perfume. German Chamomile is a fantastic addition to any blend targeting relaxation and can help ease tension and promote a sense of calm.
Now, let's dive into some delightful recipes using these delightful chamomile oils:
1. Roman Chamomile Dreams Blend:
- 6 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil
- 4 drops Lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Cedarwood essential oil
- 10 ml fractionated coconut oil (carrier oil)
This blend combines the soothing qualities of Roman Chamomile with the calming Lavender and grounding Cedarwood. Its gentle aroma will transport you to a state of tranquility.
2. Confidence Boost
- 5 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil
- 5 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 10 drops German Chamomile essential oil
- 10 ml fractionated coconut oil (carrier oil)
This blend harnesses the relaxing properties of both chamomile oils and the grounding effects of Frankincense. It's helpful in promoting a sense of grounding and balance.
To make either of these in a spray, simply use a 2 ounce glass spray bottle, add the same amount of essential oils, and then fill up the bottle with either:
-vodka or witch hazel
-a combination of half vodka or witch hazel and half water
-shake well each time before you spray
Apart from their wellness benefits, it's fascinating to delve into the historical and fun aspects of Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile.
Chamomile has a long history of use in Ancient Greek civilizations, as well as Egypt and Rome, where it was cherished for its calming and relaxing properties. The name, "chamomile," is derived from the Greek words "chamai" meaning "ground" and "melon" meaning "apple," referring to its low-growing habit and the apple-like scent of its flowers.
Roman Chamomile, scientifically known as Chamaemelum nobile or Anthemis nobilis, was named by a 19th century botanist who was said to have found it growing by the Roman Coliseum.
German Chamomile, also known as Blue Chamomile, owes its stunning blue color to the presence of chamazulene, a compound that develops during the distillation process. According to this study on PubMed.gov, chamazulene was found beneficial for osteoarthritic inflammation.
Give these blends a try or create your own custom perfume. It can be as easy as choosing your favorite essential oil! Blending a top, middle, and base note essential oil into a perfume has its advantages, but don't let that overwhelm you. Choose a pre made essential oil blend, or simply grab a single essential oil you love. You can reapply it as needed.
Creating your own custom perfume using essential oils is a a fun and safe DIY option that your four-legged companions also benefit from. Horses and dogs have extraordinary senses of smell, and wearing essential oil perfumes offers an easy and effective way to introduce them to the world of natural pet care.
